Barbados Blackbelly Sheep
The Barbados Blackbelly sheep have there origin in Africa. The breed developed on the Island of Barbados. In 1904 the USDA imported a flock of them to study. One ram and four ewes. The Blackbelly is a parasite and disease resistant breed of sheep. The Rams are usually polled but occasionally they will have small scurs. The North Carolina State University maintained a closed flock until 1996 when the sold the herd to a privet farm. Many Texas game farmers crossed the Barbados Blackbelly with Rambouillet and Mouflon(a wild sheep which resulted in a tame sheep cross retaining many of the disease resistant and parasite resistant traits). This also produced animals with very nice horns which are sought after in Texas game farms. The Barbados Blackbelly is on the governments watch list. The Barbados Blackbelly's are a hair sheep bred for meat. The flavor of the meat is excellent and is much milder than the usual market lambs. Unlike most sheep they breed any time of the year. Generally having twins or better with ease. The Barbados Blackbelly sheep are good for sheep dog trials because they are smaller and more agile animals that can run all day. |
